U.S.School Districts From Philadelphia to Boston Announce Closures and Delays

As cities in the Northeast and New England prepared for what might be a sweeping winter storm on Tuesday, dozens of school systems in a handful of states canceled classes, pulled the plug on after-school activities and modified their schedules in other ways.

Although the storm is not predicted to linger, it will bring strong winds and coastal flooding to some areas, and school officials are not taking the impending weather lightly.

Here’s a brief look at schools across the Northeast.

  • Dozens of other school systems just north of the city are closed Tuesday, including several in Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Rye and White Plains.

  • In New Jersey, where parts of the state may be slammed with up to a foot of snow, Newark Public Schools are closed Tuesday along with Jersey City and Paterson Public Schools. Farther south in Edison, public schools are operating on a delayed opening.

  • Philadelphia’s school district is operating on a two-hour delay. Some surrounding districts, including Pottstown School District and Upper Merion Area School District plan to have virtual learning days.

  • Farther north in Massachusetts, Boston Public Schools are closed, along with public schools in Plymouth and Salem.
